NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Ten months after a kick-off ceremony at the New Rochelle Public Library, 14 young people were recognized for successfully completing the NY Youth Works Construction Training Program offered through the New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority.
Council Member Jared Rice (District 3) played a leadership role in bringing together the various agencies that made the program possible.
“After months of hard work, the City of New Rochelle, New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority and National Builders Association were able to take advantage of the NY Youth Works grant to tackle unemployment among young people in New Rochelle,” said Rice. “What was unique about our approach was our focus on one particular industry, the construction trade. Eventually, these trainees will be working on development projects occurring in and around New Rochelle.”
The NY Youth Works Program was developed in 2011 by New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to combat the unacceptably high unemployment rates among inner city youth.
The New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority-NY Youth Works Construction Training program was made possible due a grant awarded the NRMHA from NY Youth Works and through the cooperative efforts of The New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority, The City of New Rochelle, The New York State Labor Department, The Westchester-Putnam Workforce Investment Board and The National Builders Association.
