When Administration believes in something, good can come of it.
Look at Bridgeport CT. This Superintendent has realized that the schools are the basis to environmental education, and he puts his power behind the process and all schools are going green, with the education and the supervision of the staff that needs to happen for this change to actually take place.
New Rochelle has come far already, since I started pushing the Sustainability issue, but not as far as we could be.
Davis is still waiting for its recycling containers, 1.5 years after Mr Gallagher was put in charge of implementing Mr Quinn’s mandate of following the NYS Source separation laws in all schools.
Most schools have not received the small bins for each classrooms that were bought and paid for in September of 2012.
Barnard had it’s containers since Oct 2012, but until I pressed the issue last week, they had not seen any bags of commingled. However, the plant supervisor has now promised me that the past is the past and from now on he will personally make sure that all cardboard and paper from the building will actually make it into the correct container, that all commingled recycling bins throughout the building will be clear plastic lined and will be brought out to the commingled container, instead of the trash.
I applaud this and am looking forward to seeing results.
New Rochelle has now the chance to recruit a new Superintendent, and I sure hope, we will see finally some drive behind School Sustainability, as well as accountability within Buildings and Grounds.
