BOSTON, MA — The Iona College men’s soccer team completed its opening weekend slate with a 1-0 loss to Boston University Sunday evening at Nickerson Field. The Gaels now stand at 0-1-1 on the year.

After the teams played a scoreless first half, heavy rain caused a 10-minute weather delay in the second after the field accumulated several large puddles. The Terriers struck for the game’s only goal in the 74th minute following the resumption of play. Felix De Bona headed in a free kick off the foot of Bjarki Benediktsson into the near post for the game-winner.

“We missed two great chances to score early on,” said head coach Fernando Barboto. “The rain made the field practically unplayable for a team like ours that attempts to play soccer, and the stoppage hurt us in the end.”

Overall, Iona was outshot 25-9 in the game, with the Terriers also holding a 13-3 advantage in corners. Senior forward Ignacio Maganto led the way with seven shots in the contest for the Maroon & Gold.

Sophomore goalkeeper Julian Petrello made five saves for the Gaels, while Boston netminder Nick Thomson made one stop. Iona continues non-conference action Thursday at Delaware. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
