NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Reading for pleasure is alive and well, as demonstrated by the extraordinary participation in the 2014 summer programs at the New Rochelle Public Library’s main building and its Huguenot Children’s Library branch. With the theme of “Fizz, Boom, Read! Science is Magic,” the two libraries offered over 278 programs in a six week period, with record-breaking culminating parties during the seventh week, on August 19th and 20th.
Nearly 800 children and teens participated in the Summer Reading Game, reading nearly 10,000 books in the same period of time. With attendance numbers topping 7,500, children and teens engaged in workshops in architecture, writing, gardening, crafts, experiments, chess, cooking, dance, yoga, journaling, and other activities designed to encourage literary, creative, problem-solving, and cultural pursuits during the summer months. Residents of all ages also enjoyed live shows from the Animal Embassy conservation center and the 31st year of spectacular International Music and Dance performances.
“The wonderful array of summer programs our staff is able to offer is totally dependent upon the dedication and generosity of the library’s three fund raising organizations,” said library director Thomas Geoffino. “The significant donations of the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library and the Partnership for the Huguenot Children’s Library, with additional program support from the New Rochelle Public Library Foundation, ensured a summer of reading, fun and enriching experiences for so many New Rochelle children and adults. We are very grateful.”
