Men’s Water Polo Drops Two At Northern Championship

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The fourth seeded Iona College men’s water polo team dropped its first two games of the 2014 CWPA Northern Division Championship Saturday afternoon at MIT. The Gaels opened the day with a 10-7 loss to Fordham before dropping the second game of the day 16-13 to Connecticut College.

Seniors Kyle Elmore and Jake Lloyd each tallied six goals over the two contests. Lloyd’s six goals moved his season total to 95 and his career total to 304. Lloyd is the second player in program history to register 300 career tallies. Senior Ian Thompson scored three goals on the day for Iona, while junior Zach Presto and sophomore Chris Ellis had a goal in each contest.

In the opener against Fordham, the Gaels fell behind 3-0 after the first quarter and could never catch up. The two teams then mirrored two goals in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth to reach the 10-7 final.

Lloyd scored twice, while Thompson also found the net two times in the first game. Presto, Elmore and Ellis had the other Iona goals in the game.

Against Connecticut College, the Gaels fell behind once again, as the Camels scored five goals to Iona’s two in the first quarter. Connecticut College added six more in the second period to take an 11-5 lead into the half. Iona responded with eight goals in the second half but could not catch up late.

Elmore scored five times in the contest, while Lloyd registered four tallies. Thompson scored one goal, along with Presto, Ellis and junior Gerardo Sanchez Rivera.

Iona concludes its Northern Division slate Sunday at 9:00 am against MIT.
