WEST PLAINS, MO — 2014 was a remarkable season for the #17-ranked Monroe Mustangs women’s volleyball team. They had an amazing winning streak of 23 straight match wins including 66 straight set victories. But, they couldn’t see all their dreams come true as they dropped the District Championship 0-3 (23-25, 14-25, 18-25) to West Plains, MO on Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs had a lot of energy but weren’t at their sharpest in the Final. While they had more attacks (81) than the home team (79), their percentage of accuracy was down (.99). But credit the Grizzlies, they defended well, with 27 digs (to Monroe’s 24).

Regardless, this was a remarkable season for Monroe. In just their first campaign in Division I, the Mustangs had that winning streak and those 35 wins. Coach Nephtali Delgado Reyes’ squad also had a sophomore, Edmarie Freytes, who led the nation in aces. And they established some wondrous freshmen including Ashley Ramos, Barbara Maximiano, and Nelmarie Cruz, which bodes very well for the future.
