NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Funeral services for Albertha Richberg Howard-Shearrod 91, of New Rochelle, New York, will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, July 28 2015, at Greater Sydney Park Baptist Church, Bamberg. Burial will follow in Richburg Family Cemetery on Spring Branch Road, Bamberg.
Mrs. Howard-Shearrod died Friday, July 17, at Montefiore Sound Shore Hospital in New Rochelle.
She was born Dec 1, 1923, TO THE LATE Rev.Daniel R. and Julia Hightower-Richberg in Bamberg County. She attended the Bamberg County public Schools. While in South Carolina, she attended various churches: Lemon Swamp, Fish Pond, Sweet Branch, Pilgrim, Sidney Park, Shrub Branch, Sweet Rose, Mount Hermon and Sixty Six. As a teenager, she moved to New York City in the early 1940s. Once there she continued her affiliation with many churches. In 1944, she married William Miller Howard and to this union three children were born. Her working career was spent working at New York’s St. Clare’s Hospital in the pediatrics department. In early 1970s she helped form the Family Circle Club, which continues to sponsor Richberg, Hightower and Nimmons family gatherings between New York, South Carolina and Georgia.
Surviving are three children, William Daniel Howard of Chicago, Julia Howard of Owings Mills, Maryland and Linda (Alex) Howard-Ryan of Mount Vernon, New York; two brothers Samuel Richburg or Bamberg and Solomon Richburg of New York City; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Carroll Mortuary of Bamberg will be in charge of services. The family will be greeting friends after the burial at the Blair Crosby Civic center, 2523 Main Highway, U.S. Highway 301, Bamberg.
