Sister Mary Dominica, Taught at Holy Name School 1962-1979, Dies at 101

NEW YORK, NY —Sister Mary Dominica Buttner, a resident of the Wartburg Home in Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2015 at the age of 101. She was born Rita Mary Buttner in the Bronx on December 17, 1913 to the late George and Matilda (German) Buttner. Along with her parents she was predeceased by her siblings, Joseph and Matilda Buttner. On October 4, 1930 she entered the Sister’s of St. Francis Neumann Community and made her final religious profession on July 14, 1936. She began teaching in many schools in Astoria, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Poughkeepsie from 1933 to 1956, as well as Holy Name of Jesus School in New Rochelle from 1962 to 1979. Sister Mary Dominica also was part of community ministries as Local Superior at the Convent at Mt. Loretto, Staten Island, Boys Division from 1956 to 1962. She was also general treasurer for the community and local treasurer of the mother house in Hastings on Hudson from 1979 to 2001. In 2004 she retired from active ministry and July 2011 she moved to The Wartburg Adult Care Community. Sister’s and friends may visit on Tuesday morning July 21, 2015 from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the Wartburg Community Chapel, 2 Wartburg Place Mt. Vernon, NY 10552. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 AM. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in the memory of Sister Mary Dominica Buttner may be made to Sister’s of St. Frances of the Neumann Community, 6900 Buckley Rd. Syracuse, NY 13212
