NEW ROCHELLE, NY —  The Monroe College women’s soccer team closed out its two game, Wyoming road trip, with a 2-1 victory over Laramie County Community College on Sunday.  A pair of first-half goals from Brooke Smith and Nicole Rivera ensured the win.

The first twenty minutes of play saw both sides struggle to get good scoring chances.  Elysa Virella had a chance for Monroe in the ninth minute, but her shot went wide of the net.  The Mustangs finally got on the board at the 22:17 mark.  Following a foul on the Golden Eagles, Smith got the ball and beat the keeper for the opening score, giving Monroe a 1-0 lead.

Nearly seven minutes later, the Mustangs doubled their advantage.  Maia Wiliams played the ball into the box to Rivera who blasted the shot into the net for a goal.  Monroe nearly took a 3-0 lead in the final minute of the half when an Aline Delima shot was stopped by the Laramie keeper.  The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead into the half.

The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard just past the hour mark of the second half.  At 63:22, Brittney Crank took a pass from a teammate and found the back of the net.  Laramie was within 2-1.  Monroe held the Golden Eagles scoreless the rest of the way to earn the 2-1 win.

In the game, Rivera and Delima each had two shots.  Sabrina Cardona came in as a sub and took a shot.  Tiffany Martinez made one save to earn her first win of the season.

The Monroe College women’s soccer team returns to action on Saturday, September 19, when they face the College of Southern Maryland in La Plata, Maryland.  Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
