Volleyball Defeats Nassau in Four Sets

NEW ROCHELLE, NY —  The Monroe College volleyball improved to 21-0 with a four set win over Nassau Community College on Tuesday night in Garden City, New York.  The Mustangs lost the first set, 25-21, but rebounded to take the next three sets, 25-19. 25-8 and 25-11.  The first set loss was just the third set the team has dropped all season long.

Monroe jumped out to a 2-0 win on a Barbara Maximiano kill and a Gabriella Nobrega service ace.  From there, Nassau took the lead, 8-3.  Eventually Monroe would be down, 15-9, but rallied to tie the score at 15-15.  The points came from three errors, two kills from Karen Souza and a kill from Natuica Vega.  Nassau went on to win the set, 25-21.

Set two began with Monroe taking a 6-1 lead.The points came from a Jourdan Hodge kill and strong serving from Maximiano.  The lead got up to 12-3 courtesy of a pair of Neysha Gonzalez aces, two kills and a few errors.  Nassau would come as close as 21-17.  The set ended at 25-19 when Nautica Vega served up an ace.

Monroe opened up the third set with six straight points.  The lead got as large as 16 points when a strong serve from Souza was misplayed.  The point gave Monroe a 23-7 lead.  The set ended at 25-8 when Nobrega served up an ace.

The final set went to the Mustangs, 25-11.  The score was close early on, as Monroe held a slim, 8-6 cushion.  A 6-1 run gave them a 14-7 lead.  They closed out the match with an 11-4 run.  In the win, Maximiano had a match-best 15 kills.  Nobrega tallied 36 assists and Gonzalez had 15 digs.

The Monroe College volleyball team returns to action on Thursday, September 24, when they face FIT on the road.  The opening serve is slated for 7:00 PM.
