NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The New Rochelle Police Department is participating in GTSC Pedestrian Safety Action Plan, a two-week education and enforcement period, which commenced on June 20, 2016. The program coincides with New York State’s first ever, comprehensive Pedestrian Safety Action Plan (PSAP) in an attempt to deal with the critical issue of pedestrian crashes. Warning cards and other See! Be Seen! materials have been distributed by New Rochelle police officers during the first week in lieu of citations.
“This campaign reminds us that we all need to share the road and abide by state laws, most pedestrian injuries and fatalities occur as the result of the inattentiveness of motorists and the failure of pedestrians to use crosswalks, ” said Sergeant Myron Joseph Quote. “It is extremely crucial for motorists to be aware and prepare of crossing pedestrians at all times.”
Week one was devoted to educating pedestrian and motorists. In week two, police will issue tickets to motorists and pedestrians who violate sections of the vehicle and traffic law which addresses pedestrian safety. More than a dozen police agencies across the state are conducting pedestrian safety enforcement campaigns that will run through July 3.
PSAP, the five-year, multi-agency initiative, provides $110 million to improve safety for pedestrians through infrastructure improvements, public education efforts and enforcement across Upstate and Long Island. Learn more on pedestrian safety, www.ny.gov/pedsafety .
