After holding a 5-3 lead at halftime, the Maroon and Gold could not hold on, ultimately falling to Wagner 6-5. An early fourth quarter goal put the Gaels away for good, as they dropped their fourth straight contest. Sophomore Andres Guerra led the Gaels with two goals, while freshman Jorge Andres Torres made 13 saves in net.
The Maroon and Gold put together a great all-around performance in the first quarter, scoring three without conceding a goal. Guerra put the Gaels on the board two minutes in, followed by a strike by junior Zach Roper. With 3:40 remaining in the quarter, senior Matthew Rothman gave the Gaels a 3-0 with a strike of his own. Iona held the Wagner offense off the scoresheet for the rest of the quarter.
Wagner scored the opening goals in the second quarter to cut the Iona lead to 3-2. Freshman Quinn Lloyd haulted the rally, scoring his 24th goal of the season. With 34 ticks remaining, Guerra tallied his second of the game to put the Gaels back up by three. The Gaels could not hold the three goal lead , as the Seahawks found a late goal to cut the score to 5-3 heading into halftime.
The second half was a struggle for the Maroon and Gold, as they were held scoreless and conceded their lead. With 2:42 remaining in the third quarter, Wagner found the back of the net to cut the Iona lead to 5-4. The Seahawks scored two more goals in the opening 1:08 of the fourth quarter to give themselves their first lead of the game, 6-5. The Seahawks defense clamped down over the final six minutes to stifle the Gaels.
The Maroon and Gold will take the pool tomorrow afternoon to complete the Harvard Invitational against Bucknell at 1:00 PM.
