Summer Family Film Series to Feature Classic Musicals

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Six Oscar-winning films for the whole family to enjoy will be shown in the air-conditioned Ossie Davis Theater of the main New Rochelle Public Library on Mondays at 6:00 pm, with free admission. 

The series begins on Monday, July 3rd with the 1994 animated Disney classic, The Lion King. The voices of Matthew Broderick, Rowan Atkinson, and Whoopi Goldberg relate the coming-of-age adventure in which Simba, a lion cub who cannot wait to be king, searches for his destiny in the great ‘Circle of Life.’ The film runs 88 minutes. 

 On Monday, July 10th, E.T. will be shown. Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece about a young boy, Elliott, who discovers a friendly extra-terrestrial that has been stranded on earth, stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, and Drew Barrymore. The 1982 film is appropriate for children ages 7 and older, and runs 115 minutes.

The 1916 Oscar-winning film, Hidden Figures, will be the featured film on Monday, July 17th. 

As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. The 127-minute film stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae.  

The glorious 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz, will delight all ages on Monday, July 24th. The story of Dorothy

and Toto, who are whisked away in a tornado to the magical land of Oz to meet the Lion, the Tinman, the 

Scarecrow, and the good and wicked witches, stars Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, and Bert Lahr, and runs 102

minutes.

Based on a Caldecott Medal-winning historical fiction picture book, Hugo will be shown on Monday, July 31st. The 2011 animated film features the voices of Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Emily Mortimer. Wily and resourceful Hugo, an orphan living in the walls of a Paris train station, embarks on a magical, mysterious adventure with the French illusionist and filmmaker Georges Méliès.  

The final film, in the series on Monday, August 7, will be the 1953 musical, Lili. The orphan Lili Daurier joins a carnival and falls under the spell of its star, a suave magician – but it’s the show’s physically challenged, embittered puppeteer who truly loves Lili, a love he can express only through his puppets. The color film runs 81 minutes and stars Leslie Caron, Mel Ferrer, Jean-Pierre Aumont.
