PELHAM, NY — On Tuesday, August 8th at 7:30 p.m. The Picture House Regional Film Center (TPH) will host an advance screening of The Only Living Boy in New York (R; 1hr., 30 mins.), followed by a discussion with the director Marc Webb led by TPH’s critic-in-residence Marshall Fine. The Only Living Boy in New York opens nationwide on Friday, August 11th.
Starring Kate Beckinsale, Jeff Bridges, and Pierce Brosnan, The Only Living Boy in New York follows Thomas Webb (Callum Turner), the son of a publisher and his artistic wife, who has just graduated from college and is trying to find his place in the world. Moving from his parents’ Upper West Side apartment to the Lower East Side, he befriends his neighbor W.F. (Jeff Bridges), a shambling alcoholic writer who dispenses worldly wisdom alongside healthy shots of whiskey. Thomas’ world begins to shift when he discovers that his long-married father (Pierce Brosnan) is having an affair with a seductive younger woman (Kate Beckinsale). Determined to break up the relationship, Thomas ends up sleeping with his father’s mistress, launching a chain of events that will change everything he thinks he knows about himself and his family.
After the screening, TPH’s critic-in-residence Marshall Fine will moderate a discussion and Q&A with the director Marc Webb. An in-demand music video director for nearly 10 years, Webb’s career path changed dramatically after his first feature, the endearingly bittersweet romance 500 Days of Summer (2009) brought him to the attention of the critical community. He went on to direct the 2012 Spider-Man reboot The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014. Prior to The Only Living Boy in New York, Webb most recently directed the 2017 comedy-drama film Gifted.
