Monroe Women’s Basketball Takes Down Schoolcraft for Season-Opening Victory

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College women’s basketball team got the new season started on the right foot, as the Mustangs defeated Schoolcraft College by a score of 77-70 on Saturday in the first day of the Anthony Torchia Memorial Tournament, hosted by Mohawk Valley Community College.

Cristina Soriano led the way for the Mustangs by compiling 14 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. She also added a pair of blocks and three assists. Phyness Baldwin netted a team-high 15 points, while Jessica Degree banked 12. Baldwin and Amani Williams matched for a team-high three steals. Lisana Burnett finished with six points, 10 boards and two blocks. Jada Banks added 10 more points for the Mustangs.

Monroe shot an impressive 50.8 percent from the field on Saturday. The Mustangs also made 44.4 percent (8-of-18) of their threes. The team totaled 43 rebounds on the afternoon, including 15 on the offensive boards.

Monroe will now take on tournament host Mohawk Valley on Sunday, Nov. 5, in the Mustangs’ final game of the weekend’s tournament. Sunday’s contest is set to begin at 2 p.m.
