No. 3 Monroe Men’s Soccer Defeats Monroe Community College to Advance to Northeast District Finals

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The No. 3 Monroe College men’s soccer team is back in the Northeast District Championship game for the second straight season after the Mustangs rolled to a 7-1 victory over District Championship Tournament host Monroe Community College on Saturday. The Mustangs improve to 12-0-2 heading into the District Championship, while the Tribunes drop to 10-4-2.

The Mustangs took control early on when Javier Rodriguez scored off an assist from Carlos Rodriguez in the 17th minute. Carlos Rodriguez then got one of his own, scoring at the 20:50 mark off a cross from Gabriel Machado to make it 2-0 early in the game. Machado was next up for the Mustangs, as Carlos Rodriguez returned the favor with an assist on the goal in the 32nd minute to push Monroe’s lead to 3-0. The Mustangs got on the board once more in the opening half when Carlos Rodriguez scored his second of the day off an assist from Jorge Figueroa, but the Tribunes got one back just 37 seconds later on Kevin Kabongo’s goal to send the game to 4-1 at the break.

In the 56th minute, Lucas Nishioka found the back of the net for the Mustangs to make it a 5-1 game. Ryan Smart scored 10 minutes later to push the lead to five goals, and Mateus Candido closed it out with a goal in the 84th minute to cap off a 7-1 victory.

Svyat Kozak picked up the win in net for the Mustangs to improve to 7-0 on the season. Kyle Bimek falls to 5-1-1 for the Tribunes after shouldering the loss.

Carlos Rodriguez led the Mustangs with a pair of goals and three assists for an outstanding seven-point day. Machado finished with three points on a goal and an assist. Javier Rodriguez, Nishioka, Smart and Candido added the other four goals for the Mustangs.

Monroe outshot its hosts, 17-5, while picked up a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. The Mustangs also earned a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Mustangs will take on No. 15 Mercer County Community College in Sunday’s Northeast District Championship game, after Mercer County defeated Massasoit Community College, 2-0, following the Mustangs’ victory over the Tribunes. Sunday’s finals are set to begin at 12 p.m.
