WHITE PLAINS, NY — Mauro Zonzini raised his arms in triumph and shouted “Victory!” from the top of the stairs at the U.S. Courthouse in White Plains Friday after U.S. District Judge Nelson S. Román sentenced Zonzini to two terms, to run concurrently, of one year Supervised Release — no prison time — for his role in an extensive bribery and kickback scheme.
Zonzini plead guilty on August 5, 2017 to one count of Bribery and one count of Tax Evasion. He was given a reduced sentence in exchange for his cooperation in a criminal case against former New Rochelle School Official John Gallagher who was sentenced Wednesday to 37 months in prison plus two years Supervised Release and fines, fees and restitution in excess of $250,000.
For his part in the bribery and kickback scheme. Zonzini must pay a $20,000 fee, a $200 special assessment, $148,000 in federal back taxes (plus any applicable state and local taxes) and $125,000 in restitution to the City School District of New Rochelle, joint and severally with John Gallagher.
No members of Zonzini family or friends were present at the sentencing. Noticeably was retired New Rochelle Police Commissioner Patrick Carroll, a long time associate of Zonzini.
