NEW ROCHELLE, NY — On Thursday, for Poem in Your Pocket Day, the English teachers at New Rochelle High School made sure students were well-versed in great writing. As part of National Poetry Month, they handed out poems by Sylvia Plath, Gwendolyn Brooks, Shel Silverstein, Langston Hughes, rupi kaur, Li-Young Lee, Judith Ortiz Cofer and others as students entered the school.

The poems were chosen to showcase poets who reflect the diversity of New Rochelle High School.

“As a department, we are always looking for ways to help students fall in love with the beauty of language and literature,” said Lydia Adegbola, chair of the NRHS English department. “Creating an opportunity to greet students with poems was a lively way to start the day. It was thrilling to hear them discuss and share their poems in the hallways.”
