NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Department of Public Works hosted a Truck Day event for kindergartners and first graders at Columbus Elementary School (Washington Ave, New Rochelle) on Friday, June 8. Students had the opportunity to explore the department’s ‘big trucks’ and at the same time learn about the important role Public Works plays in our community.

“The men and women of the Department of Public Works provide essential services and are often unseen,” noted Commissioner Scott Pickup. “Thank you to Principal Michael Galland and his staff for making it possible to visit the children at Columbus to share a little bit about what we do.”

The event featured four DPW vehicles: garbage truck, street sweeper, claw and dump truck. DPW workers spoke to fourteen classes about their jobs and the equipment they use, and emphasized the safety messages of “Think Safety, Think Smart” and “Slow Down To Get Around”. Students embraced the opportunity to touch a truck and see the trucks in action.
