NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The City School District of New Rochelle marked the successful completion of opening week for the 2018-2019 school year today, with its first full day of classes for all students.
“We had a fantastic start to a brand new school year,” said Superintendent Dr. Brian Osborne. “From one end of the District to the other, we saw lots of smiling faces, educators ready to teach and students eager to learn. The City School District of New Rochelle family is off to a great year.”
Students returned to the District in phases. On Wednesday, students from pre-Kindergarten through ninth-grade reported to their school buildings. Elementary school students had a half day of classes.
“I’m looking forward to learning and I’m looking forward to doing some writing,” said Sofia Escoferry, a fifth-grader, as she and her schoolmates gathered outside the George M. Davis Jr. Elementary School early Wednesday. “I like to write historical fiction.” She particularly likes the 1700s. “It’s really interesting to me how different it was.”
Middle school students stepped into the year with an orientation session of 60 to 90 minutes on Wednesday while at New Rochelle High School, freshmen were treated to a full day of orientation, including a mindfulness session and a picnic.
“We’re here to help you guys,” Dr. Josh Logan, school psychologist, told a group in House 1. “Make sure you use people in the building to help you. This is your team. Use us.”
The high school upper classmen returned yesterday, with juniors and seniors easing into the year with orientation only. Sophomores stayed for classes.
This morning, the introductions were complete and the first regular full day for everyone in the District began.
“I’m looking forward to meeting all the new people in my classes,” said senior Vida Cruz, a cheerleader. She was also eager to start a marine science class she enrolled in and to gather at the Huguenots’ football games “because of the strong school spirit.”
