Judge Denies Motion for Bail Reduction for New Rochelle Man Arrested for Cache of Illegal Assault Weapons and Ammo

Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Judge Susan I. Kettner today denied a motion for bail reduction by a court-appointed attorney for Nicholas Gomes-Suppa. Or just “Suppa” according to court records.

Suppa appeared in court today via teleconference from the county jail wearing an orange jumpsuit, wearing a surgical mask. Suppa, who appears to be White, has reddish-brown hair, parted on the side.

On October 15th, Nicholas Suppa, 29, of New Rochelle was arrested after New Rochelle Police Detectives recovered more illegal weapons from Suppa’s residence, among them an AR-15 “Assault” Rifle, an “Assault” shotgun and a 9MM Glock handgun with seven large capacity magazines.

Bail was set by Kettner at Suppa’s arraignment on October 16th at $50,000 cash bail, $50,000 bond or $50,000 partially secured by 10% or $5,000. Suppa did not post bail and has been incarcerated at the Westchester County Jail since.

During the motion on bail reduction today, Suppa’s attorney argued that Suppa was not a flight risk because he has lived in New Rochelle all his life, he lives in New Rochelle now with his girlfriend and 10-year-old son, his mother lives in Scarsdale, he works in New Rochelle, he has no prior history with law enforcement, he was cooperative with police and is “absolutely zero” flight risk. The attorney said Suppa’s father is a small business owner in Westchester County who has been struggling during the pandemic.

The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office argued against a bail reduction, suggesting they might even request a high bail based on new information they had developed regarding “disturbing comments” attributed to Suppa on social media.

In denying bail, Kettner denied the motion stating that defense counsel was not presenting any new information and making the same arguments as were made at the arraignment when she set bail. She added that she would not reduce bail “given the severity of these charges in this community”.

Suppa is due back in court of November 6, 2020.

Suppa was arrested following what police called a routine traffic stop at about 8:00 pm on October 15th. New Rochelle Police officers a recovered a custom assembled 9MM handgun with an extended magazine.

Following a search of Suppa’s residence New Rochelle Police Detectives recovered more illegal weapons among them what police described as an AR-15 “Assault” Rifle, an “Assault” shotgun and a 9MM Glock handgun with seven “large capacity” magazines

The incident is under investigation and anyone with information is urged to contact the New Rochelle Police Department’s General Investigations Unit at 914-654-2270.
