New Rochelle Police Involved in Brooklyn Shootout with Suspect in Taxi Driver Killing

BROOKLYN, NY — New Rochelle Police Officers were involved in a shootout in Brooklyn at about 11 am Sunday morning with a suspect in the killing of a taxi driver in a parking lot in downtown New Rochelle, according to the New York Police Department.

Shanduke McPhatter, founder of Gangsters Making Astronomical Community Changes (G-MACC), a non-profit anti-gun violence organization, said he was told more than 20 shots were fired.

UPDATE 3:30 PM: Reports from the scene is FBI is taking charge, suspect involved in a second shooting, unconfirmed.

“I can confirm that New Rochelle police did locate through investigation the suspect wanted in the October 14 homicide of a cab driver. New Rochelle police detectives responded to a location in Brooklyn and found and encountered the suspect. Gunfire was exchanged with the suspect. No one was hurt and the suspect is now in custody. Investigation is still underway and more will be released.

Andres Valenzuela, age 62, a New Rochelle man born in Mexico, was shot and killed in the early hours of Thursday morning in the Juliano’s Restaurant parking lot located at 700 Main Street in New Rochelle.

New Rochelle police officers were at NYCHA’s Ingersoll House in the area of Myrtle Avenue and Fleet Place surveilling the male suspect’s car.

As the suspect exited his vehicle, he pulled out a gun and began shooting at NRPD officers who had surrounded him, said NYPD.

No one was struck and there were no reported injuries.

A gun was recovered at the scene.

The suspect was taken into custody by police, according to NYPD.
