Two Free ArtsWestchester-Funded Performances of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf in New Rochelle 6/3-4

Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (May 9, 2022) — Peter and the Wolf is Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev’s most frequently performed work and one of the most frequently performed works in the entire classical repertoire; a symphonic fairy tale for children — a timeless classic that has enthralled children (and adults) for generations.

ArtsWestchester has funded what is billed as “a free music and dance performance showcasing the artistic talents of New Rochelle students, while celebrating our community and the beauty of classical music and ballet.” Songcatchers is a fiscal sponsor for the grant.

There is no cost to attend these performances, so bring the kids.

“Peter” will be featured as part of the Coleman School of Dance showcase scheduled on June 3 at 7 pm and performed as a standalone show June 4 at 2 pm held at the Whitney Young auditorium at New Rochelle High School.

In this telling, the duck is only hiding (never eaten) and the wolf will be returned to a local nature preserve by the nature explorers (the youngest ballerinas).

Student and professional ballerinas will be accompanied by a live orchestra composed of advanced student and professional musicians led by Conductor Alan Hollander, a New Rochelle native.

There will be photo opportunities with the ballerinas and a lake scene backdrop.

A concession stand fundraiser will support dance scholarships at the Joffrey Ballet for 2 teen dancers.

Aviva Segal is the visionary and organizer, as it is her dream to see music and dance come together with the classical story of Peter and the Wolf. She is an oboist in the New Rochelle High School Performing and Visual Education (PAVE) band program and an active member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society in New Rochelle High School. She has also been a dedicated Songcatchers volunteer piano teacher for 3 years. In addition to being a musician, Ms. Segal is also a dancer with the Coleman School of Dance. Her participation in both of these artistic outlets was the inspiration for this project.
