Port Chester Police Warn of Rise in Gym Locker Break-Ins, Credit Card Fraud Reported

Written By: Robert Cox

PORT CHESTER, NY (April 20, 2026) — The Port Chester Police Department is warning residents about an increase in gym locker break-ins, including cases where suspects cut locks, steal valuables, and use stolen credit cards to commit fraud.

In a “Community Safety Notice: Gym Locker Break-Ins,” the department said “there has been an increase in gym locker break-ins” and that “suspects cut locks to access lockers and steal valuables.” Police added that “in some cases, stolen credit cards have been used to commit fraud.”

Most reported break-ins have occurred in men’s locker rooms, according to the notice. Police also said that in a few incidents, lockers were left unsecured, making it easier for suspects to access personal items.

Authorities urged gym users to take precautions, including leaving valuables at home, choosing lockers in visible areas, keeping car keys with them, and always securing lockers with a sturdy lock.

“Bring only what you truly need at the gym. If it’s not with you, it can’t be taken,” the notice states. It also advises selecting lockers in “well-trafficked, open areas” to reduce risk.

Police warned that suspects may take car keys and continue crimes in parking lots, noting that “keeping your keys with you helps protect your vehicle and anything inside it.”

The department emphasized safety, instructing the public not to confront anyone if suspicious activity is observed. “Your safety is first — call the police immediately and notify a gym employee at the front desk,” the notice states.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Port Chester Police Department at (914) 939-1000.
