NEW ROCHELLE, NY (September 4, 2026) — Margaret A. “Peggy” Godfrey, a longtime New Rochelle resident, educator, political activist and writer whose work included articles published by Talk of the Sound, died Sept. 2. She was 92.
Godfrey was born May 11, 1934, in Hartford, Connecticut, to William Joseph Godfrey and Filomena Sauro Godfrey.
She graduated from New Rochelle High School among the top 20 students in her class and later received a doctorate in educational supervision from St. John’s University.
Godfrey spent her career in education, teaching in elementary school classrooms, junior high school mathematics classes and college classes. Toward the end of her career, she supervised math teachers.
Her work in education earned several recognitions. She received awards from the Environmental Protection Agency, was named CACER of the year at an annual Catholic Alumni Club convention and was recognized in the Impact II Teacher Developed Program for her JHS 125 course, “Tailoring Mathematics Instruction.” She also was a presenter at an annual meeting of the Council of Teachers and Mathematicians.
Godfrey was active in New Rochelle politics and government. She served as a Republican district leader, was a candidate for City Council and frequently spoke at City Council meetings. She also conceived and founded the New Rochelle Reform Club.
A writer as well as an educator and political activist, Godfrey had articles published in various magazines and a letter published in The New York Times. She also wrote for Talk of the Sound, which published many of her articles.
Godfrey was devoted to Catholic worship.
She is survived by her sisters, Patricia Godfrey and Joan Coviello; her brother, Thomas Godfrey; several nieces; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Godfrey, and sister, Mary Godfrey Sutton.
Visitors are welcome at Lloyd Maxcy & Sons Beauchamp Chapel in New Rochelle from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, before a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 70 Petersville Road in New Rochelle. Burial will follow at noon at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 95 Kings Highway in New Rochelle.
