RYE, NY (September 18, 2026) — A City of Rye police officer observed a suspected mail theft from a mailbox outside the U.S. Post Office at 41 Purdy St. early Sept. 10, leading to a vehicle pursuit that police later terminated because of the vehicle’s reckless operation and road conditions.
Police said the officer was on patrol at approximately 6 a.m. when the suspected theft occurred. The officer saw an individual run from the mailbox, cross the street and enter a BMW X7.
The officer attempted to stop the BMW, but the vehicle fled the area, according to police. A pursuit was initiated before being terminated because of the vehicle’s reckless operation and existing road conditions.
The City of Rye Police Department reminded residents to take precautions when mailing checks or other sensitive items. Whenever possible, police said residents should bring outgoing mail directly inside the post office rather than leaving it in an exterior collection box.
Police also encouraged residents who observe suspicious activity around mailboxes or post offices to contact the Police Department.
