NEW ROCHELLE, NY- The Iona College men’s rowing team took first place at the Spring Metropolitan Championships on Saturday, Apr. 18.
Men’s Varsity Four saw freshman coxswain Bianca Mesqueue, senior Thomas Baik, juniors Ryan Dronzek and Brian Fairfield and sophomore Brandon O’Sullivan finish at 7:21.5, ahead of Geneseo, Rensselear, and both A and B teams from Stony Brook.
Leading the Maroon and Gold in the Novice Four event were freshman coxswain Bryan Chao, freshmen Troy Madden, Abraham Bluestone, Vito Roca and Elijah Ziobron. The team took first place, ahead of King’s Point, Geneseo, Manhattan, Hofstra and Stony Brook, with a finishing time of 8:09.2.
In the Pairs race, the duo of senior Ryan Harding and Dronzek finished in first at 8:16.9, in front of Kings Point and Manhattan.
The final race for the day was the Varsity Eight, where Iona secured first at 6:46.2. Rowing in the race were coxswain Mesqueue, Harding, Dronzek, Fairfield, O’Sullivan, Baik, Roca, and Bluestone.
The Gaels took first place overall with 89 points, followed by Geneseo in second with 82 points. The Iona College took home the O’Hare Cup with a combined total of 156 points, ahead of Geneseo with 121.
