NEW ROCHELLE, NY –The Iona College women’s soccer team completed the opening weekend of its 2015 season Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 setback to Vermont at Mazzella Field.
The game’s lone goal came in the fourth minute when Vermont’s Nikki McFarland found the back of the net off a feed from Brooke Jenkins. Jenkins sent a through pass to McFarland who was able to beat the Iona defense. She slotted a low shot to the right corner as Iona goalkeeper Taylor Rice came out to challenge the shot.
The Gaels outshot the Catamounts 4-1 in the second half, but could not tally the equalizer. Iona was also called offsides six times, including thrice in the last 45 minutes which tempered the Maroon & Gold attack.
Iona was outshot 9-8 in the contest, and only put two shots on net. Rice made two saves, equaling the total registered by Vermont’s Ally Ramos.
The Gaels are back in action Friday, Aug. 28 at 4:00 pm at Mazzella Field against Wagner.
