Connecticut Man Slowly Drives Away from Police After Traffic Stop, Busted for DWI

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle police arrested a Norwalk man for drunk driving on August 14, 2015 at about 4:30 a.m.. The arrest occurred at the intersection of Division Street and Main Street in downtown New Rochelle.

Grevel Calderon was observed by police driving erratically in downtown New Rochelle.

While stopped at a red light at the intersection of Main Street and Division Street, a police officer observed Calderon’s vehicle directly in front of him as the car moved in reverse, wrong way on a one-way street. The officer activated the siren on his radio car to alert the driver in order to prevent a collision with his police car.  Calderon began driving forward going before being pulled over by police.

Calderon, came to a stop then exited his vehicle and approached the police car. Calderon was instructed to re-enter his vehicle and take the keys out of the ignition. Calderon appeared to be staggering as he walked. Calderon then got back in his vehicle and proceeded to drive away, further down Main Street, as the police officer followed him and stopped him a second time.

When police interviewed Calderon, an odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from Calderon’s breath was detected, he exhibited slurred speech, watery bloodshot eyes and had trouble opening his eyes fully. Calderon was given standard field sobriety tests which he failed.

Calderon, age unknown, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated-First Offense, a Class A Misdemeanor, Operating a Motor Vehicle with .08 of 1% or More Alcohol in Blood-First Offense, a Class U Misdemeanor, and aggravated DWI for blood-alcohol content of .18 or more, a Class U Misdemeanor. Calderon, a citizen of Honduras, does not have a social security number.
