NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Day one of the 2015 Monroe Invitational saw the Mustangs women’s basketball team fall to Monroe Community College, 91-78, in a basketball game played in New Rochelle on Saturday afternoon. Five Monroe players finished in double figures in scoring, led by sophomore Gabrielle Jubinville, who paced the team with 15 points and nine rebounds.
In what has become commonplace for the Mustangs this season, the team got off to an auspicious start in the opening quarter. They led 20-16 after the first ten minutes of play. Monroe took the lead halfway through the quarter when Destini Green found Jubinville on the break for a layup, making the score 8-7. The lead got as large as seven points, when Jubinville buried a jumper off an assist from Camilla Kilinc. After the Tribunes fought back and pulled within a single point, Kilnic closed out the scoring with a three-pointer in the final minute.
Eventually Monroe Community College tied the score at 27-all, but a 5-0 run by the Mustangs put them ahead, 32-27. The five points came from a Venesa Jordan trifecta and a Fatoumata Coulibaly layup. The Tirbunes led at the hafl 48-40.
Monroe CC extend their lead in the second half, building up a cushion as large as 22 points early in the fourth quarter. A buzzer beater from Samantha Hines closed out the scoring in the game as the Tribunes won, 91-78.
Jubenville shot 7-10 in the game to lead Monroe. Desitni Green recorded a double-double with 14 points and 16 assists. Kilinc shot 6-10 off the bench to finish with 13 points. Jordan had 11, while Hines scored ten. As a team, the Mustangs shot 49.3%, their best shooting percentage of the season. They also forced 20 turnovers.
The Monroe College women’s basketball team returns to action on Sunday, November 15, when they host Mohawk Valley in the final game of the 2015 Monroe Invitational. The opening tip is slated for 2:00 PM.
