NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College men’s cross country team earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship with a second place team finish at the 2015 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at historic Franklin Park. The No. 9 ranked Gaels finished 11 points shy of No. 2 Syracuse to earn its 14th straight team appearance at the national championship in Louisville, KY in eight days.
Junior Kieran Clements was the Gaels top performer in the 10k event finishing fourth overall with a time of 30:33.8. Sophomore Gilbert Kirui was sixth, senior Michael O’Dowd seventh, sophomore Chartt Miller 10th and sophomore Brandon Allen 13th as all five scorers finished in the top 15 of the event. Kirui’s time of 30:36.1 was eight seconds faster than teammate O’Dowd (30.44.2). Miller’s clocked a 30:49.2 while Allen finished in 30:56.6. Freshmen Liam Dee (22nd, 31:13.9) and sophomore Johannes Motschmann (32nd, 31:29.8) were Iona’s sixth and seventh finishers.
With 40 points, Iona improved on its team score of 60 and a third place finish last season. The Gaels were 74 points ahead of third place Cornell with Dartmouth and Columbia rounding out the Top 5 in the team event.
The 2015 NCAA Championship takes place Saturday, Nov. 20, at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, KY.
