NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The #14 Monroe College men’s basketball team opened its 2015-16 campaign over the weekend with a pair of wins at the Chesapeake Tournament in Hagerstown, Maryland over the weekend. The Mustangs defeated Hagerstown Community College 80-70 and then prevailed over Prince George Community College, 98-83.
Four Monroe players finished in double-figures against Hagerstown. Taquan Givens, in his first action at Monroe, finished with 17 points and eight assists. Hampus Ahlin and Will Tavares totaled 13 points each, while Lukas Landgren scored 11.
Monroe trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half. But stingy defense, combined with timely scoring erased the deficit and gave the Mustangs a nine point edge at the break. They went on to win, 80-70.
Monroe defeated Prince George on Sunday, 98-83. Six Mustangs were in double figures and Givens once again paced the scoring with 18 points. Shackquiel Scott, Landgren and Tyler Ancrum each put in 11 points and Ahlin and Felix Carlsson finished with ten points apiece.
The Monroe College men’s basketball team will look to push its unbeaten start to three games, when they participate in the Central Florida Community College Tournament in Ocala, Florida. They open play against Central Florida C.C. on Thursday.
