NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Monroe College women’s basketball team dropped the final game of the 2015 Monroe College Invitational to Mohawk Valley, 62-57, in a game played at the Monroe Athletic Complex on Sunday. Freshman guard, Desitini Green, logged all 40 minutes and led the team with 16 points.
The Hawks used the first eight minutes of the game to build a 12-2 lead. Monroe came alive used a 6-0 run to draw within 12-8. The six points came from a pair of three-pointers from Venesa Jordan and Green. Mohawk Valley led 17-8 at the end of the first period.
At the 6:11 mark of the second quarter, the Hawks had a seemingly insurmountable 12-point cushion, 24-12. However, the Mustangs fought back and closed out the half on a 15-0 run. Green hit another trifecta. Camilla Kilinc followed with one of her own. Green made two foul shots and the score was 24-20. Gabrielle Jubinville followed with a couple of free throws to make the score 24-22 with 3:23 left. Jubinville then buried a jumper at the 0:52 mark to even the score at 24-all. Finally, Green hit another three with 0:17 seconds left and the Mustangs led at the half, 27-24.
A Breanna Dennis layup with 7:47 left in the third gave the Mustangs a 31-26 lead. Jordan later made a three-pointer with 0:04 left in the third to make the score 42-38 for Monroe at the end of the period.
The final ten minutes were back-and-forth as both sides jockeyed for position. Finally, Mohawk Valley overtook the Mustangs and went on to win, 62-57. In the game, Green scored 16 points on 4-6 shooting from behind the three-point line. Samantha Hines had a double-double with ten points and 12 rebounds.
The Monroe College women’s basketball team returns to action on Thursday, November 19, when they host Union County College. The opening tip is slated for 6:00 PM.
