NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona College lacrosse team was stopped by Brown University in its first road contest of the season, 13 to 11. In a back-and-forth game, the Gaels were unable regain control despite a late comeback attempt.
Junior Erin Pugh continued her hot start to the season, netting three goals and dishing out three assists. She now has nine goals on the year. Senior Mary Kate McCormick facilitated the Gaels offense dishing out five assists this afternoon; she also put up one goal.
Junior Katelyn Noschese and sophomore Emma Hager had two goals apiece. Freshmen Christine Gironda and Libby Miller and sophomore Jenna Tolzmann each scored a goal in their second consecutive game.
The Gaels got out to a hot start with Pugh putting up their first goal two minutes into the game. Iona would go on a 3-0 run before the Bears got on the board for their first point of the season. From there each team traded goals for much of the first half. Brown would go on a three goal run to close out the first half, grabbing its first lead of the game, 7-6.
The bout continued into the second half, with both teams netting goals at an even pace. Brown would go on a quick two goal run to push their lead up to three at 10-7. But the Gaels continued to fight with an answering run themselves with Pugh and Hager finding the net courtesy of McCormick, putting game at 10-9.
After Hager’s goal at the 58th minute got Iona within striking distance, the Maroon & Gold would continue their attack, rifling off three shots that were saved by Brown.
Iona out shot Brown 29 to 22 and secured more ground balls, 15 to 14. The Gaels had just nine turnovers compared to 13 of Brown.
The Maroon & Gold will take on Sacred Heart on Thursday Feb. 25 at 3:00 pm in what will be their only home contest till April.
