NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Four people were injured last night, two of them seriously, following a head-on collision involving a woman driving North on the Southbound Hutchison River Parkway in New Rochelle, according to Westchester County Police.
The incident occurred between the Mill Road and Weaver Street shortly before 11 p.m. on Tuesday. The roadway was closed for hours, re-opening at 6 a.m.
Ashley Ward, a New Rochelle resident who lives nearby, reported hearing a loud bang that “sounded like thunder”.
The wrong-way driver, a 42-year old Pelham woman is expected to be charged with offenses related to driving under the influence.
“We will be charging her with DWI at the hospital in a little while,” said Westchester County PD spokesperson Kieran O’Leary. “Other charges are possible later.”
Booking will occur when she is well enough to come here to WCPD headquarters, added O’Leary.
She was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx with injuries described as “serious”.
The woman driving North struck three other vehicles driving South in the Southbound lane. Four people were injured, two were taken to Jacobi and two were taken to Montefiore New Rochelle hospital. The wrong-way driver was the most seriously injured. One other person refused medical attention at the scene. None of the injuries was life-threatening.
Westchester County Police turned traffic around and directed drivers to exit the parkway at Pinebrook Boulevard.
