NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The New Rochelle Public Library (NRPL) is pleased to present an exhibit, “Summer Pleasures: Works by Roxanne Mapp and Sherri Paul” in the Lumen Winter Gallery, from July 6th through July 26th. An Exhibit Reception will be held on Wednesday, July 18, from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm, and is open to the public. Ms. Mapp and Ms. Paul are not only accomplished, award-winning artists, they are also librarians at NRPL.
Roxanne Catherine Mapp is a full-time graphic designer and librarian, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications from the College of New Rochelle, and a Master’s Degree in Library Science from Pratt Institute in NYC. She was born and grew up in Trinidad & Tobago, and spent her childhood summers in New Rochelle. Ms. Mapp loves to motivate and inspire others through cheerful, colorful art, mixed media paintings, and photography and creative workshops. Her art is influenced by nature, textures, bright colors, architectural shapes and lines. She uses her photography as reference for creating art and design.
Artist Sherri Paul, who is also a part-time librarian, works out of the Green Studio on Fulton Street in Lower Manhattan. At Penn State, Sherri studied under acclaimed graphic artist Harold Altman, and then received an advanced degree at Lehman College. In her New York series of paintings, Ms. Paul explores the city and its bewildering world of unlimited possibilities in a style she calls “urban realism.” These cityscapes and portraits capture the color, light and moods of the City and the variety of its inhabitants. The paintings, all in oil on linen or canvas, record fleeting moments in time with a snapshot quality and quirky humor. In a review in Gallery & Studio, Maureen Flynn wrote that Sherri Paul’s paintings “resonate poignantly in compositions as notable for their abstract virtues as their skilled realism.” In a recent series of landscapes, Ms. Paul employs softly diffused hues to imbue the romantic oils with atmospheric charm. Trees stand as sentinels or sway while breeze-blown clouds float overhead. Color harmonies bolster the snapshot quality of the scenes with underlying formality. These seasonally-inspired paintings feature natural elements such as water, air and light.
