Taxi Cab Robber Made Terroristic Threats at Ice Cream Store in Downtown Mamaroneck, Police Say

MAMARONECK, NY (June 12, 2022) — On May 30, Eduardo Martinez, age 23, of the Village of Mamaroneck pulled out a large dangerous knife inside the Paleteria Fernandez ice cream store located at 350 Mamaroneck Avenue in downtown Mamaroneck. He menaced employees then threatened to shoot up the place, police say.

At approximately 2:59 p.m., Village of Mamaroneck Police received multiple 911 calls reporting a man brandishing a knife inside Paleteria Fernandez with patrons running from the scene. Police estimate over 25 customers fled the store in a panic.

Officers responded to the scene, located, and detained a male matching the description given by the callers.

Officers conducted a search of the area and located an approximate 6″ diving/fishing knife wrapped in a purple bandanna, discarded under a parked car.

Multiple witnesses then positively identified the detained man as the person who had brandished the knife and he was subsequently placed under arrest. Witnesses also confirmed the recovered knife was the one used by the male. 

Detectives responded to conduct a further investigation and learned that while in the store, the suspect allegedly stated “he would shoot up the place” while brandishing the knife.

Eduardo Martinez was charged with Making a Terroristic Threat, a D Felony, Criminal Possession of a Weapon — 3rd, a D Felony, and Menacing —2nd, an A Misdemeanor.

Martinez was arraigned in Village of Mamaroneck Court and was remanded to the Westchester County Jail. He has a return date of June 16,

No civilians or police officers were injured in this incident.

A person is guilty of Criminal Possession of a Weapon — 3rd when such person commits the crime of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and has been previously convicted of any crime.

Eduardo Martinez was convicted of Robbery in the Third Degree on March 1, 2021.

Three months later, on June 11, 2021, Martinez, then aged 22, was charged with Robbery 1st, a B Felony after he allegedly robbed a taxi driver.

On June 3rd, 2021 officers responded to a report at 8:35 p.m. of an armed robbery in the recent past on Cooper Avenue. A cab driver reported a man engaged his cab and robbed him. Police declined to identify the type of weapon involved.

After an investigation by VOMPD Detectives, Martinez was placed under arrest on June 11. Martinez was arraigned in the Village of Mamaroneck Court and released on $5,000.00 cash bail with a return date of June 17.
