Man Injured Following Friday Night Shooting in New Rochelle; Errant Shot Strikes High Rise Building

Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (February 25, 2023) — A man sustained non-life threatening injuries after he was shot last night in downtown New Rochelle. One shot fired hit an apartment on the 13th floor of Huguenot 360, an RXR property.

The incident is the fourth major shooting incident in the area known as “The Hollow” in the past 24 months (for a complete list see below).

The incident took place at about 9:27 pm in the area of several active store fronts at 371 Main Street next to the Bracey Apartments parking lot at 361 Main Street, according to New Rochelle Police Captain Collins Coyne.

There were multiple shots fired. Witnesses reported between 8 and 12 shots. One witness described a person “shooting wildly” as panicked people ran away.

Multiple shell casings were recovered and detectives are currently developing leads, said Coyne.

One of the shots struck a building about a half mile away.

“An apparent errant shot from this incident hit a 13th floor window at 360 Huguenot Street which is approximately half a mile away and in the direct line of site of the shooting,” said Coyne.

New Rochelle Detectives responded to process both scenes.

Preliminary accounts indicate there was a dispute between two parties prior to the shooting, and that the suspect fled in a dark colored vehicle eastbound on Main Street.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call New Rochelle Police at 914-654-2300.

EDITOR’S NOTE: There was no clearly visible indication this afternoon of a window with a bullet hole 13 stories up on the Main Street side of Huguenot 360 with a direct line of site to the parking lot at 361 Main Street. There is a window about 13 stories up on the Centre Avenue side of the building with blue tape but it is not a direct line of site to the parking lot at 361 Main Street. We captured images of both areas and requested confirmation from NRPD

UPDATE: NRPD has confirmed the window about 13 stories up on the Centre Avenue side of the building with blue tape is the location where the bullet struck Huguenot 360.

The shooting incident on Friday at the Bracey Apartments marks a turning point because for the first time since we started covering New Rochelle the violence traveled outside the neighborhood around Main Street, Fountain Place and Echo Avenue — the Hollow — and made its way to a luxury high-rise apartment building a half mile away which happens to be the initial showcase development project of RXR, the City of New Rochelle’s lead developer.

What follows is just the violent incidents we reported on over the years. There have certainly been others. There have also been multiple deaths of young children, rampant drug dealing and long-standing financial irregularities at the New Rochelle Muncipal Housing Authority.
