NYS Thruway Authority Details New Rochelle Centre Avenue Bridge Closure

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (June 17, 2026) — The Centre Avenue bridge over I-95 in New Rochelle will close to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic starting Monday, June 29, as crews begin repairs on the 68-year-old structure, the New York State Thruway Authority announced. The bridge, used by approximately 3,400 vehicles daily, is expected to reopen no later than Tuesday, Sept. 1.

The closure will take effect at approximately 9 p.m. on June 29, according to the Thruway Authority.

Work will take place during both daytime and nighttime hours and will include partial demolition, joint reconstruction, bearing work, concrete substructure repairs, new sidewalks and new pavement, the agency said. The bridge will also be raised slightly to provide additional vertical clearance over the highway.

Overnight lane closures on I-95 will be required during night work to protect the safety of construction crews and motorists, the Thruway Authority said. The shoulders below Centre Avenue, at mile marker 5.39, will be closed to stage bridge jacking equipment.

Motorists are directed to follow posted detours during the closure. Eastbound traffic should use Warren Street, Union Avenue, Memorial Highway and Huguenot Street. Westbound traffic should use Memorial Highway, Division Street, Union Avenue and Warren Street. Pedestrians should use Warren Street, Union Avenue, Memorial Highway and Huguenot Street in both directions.

Variable message signs will be posted in the area to alert the public to the closure, according to the Thruway Authority. All work is weather dependent and subject to change.

The bridge repair is part of an $86.7 million pavement improvement project covering nearly five miles of I-95, also known as the New England Thruway, in Westchester County. The project, which began in April 2025, involves a contractor repairing the highway and working on 12 bridges in both directions between Pelham Manor and Mamaroneck, the agency said.

In addition to the Centre Avenue bridge, crews have rehabilitated or will rehabilitate five other bridges, including the Chatsworth Avenue bridge in Larchmont and the bridge serving Metro-North Railroad’s Larchmont station, according to the Thruway Authority. Six other bridges on I-95 will be resurfaced as part of the project.

DeFoe Corp. of Mount Vernon is the project contractor, selected through a competitive bidding process, the agency said.

Motorists can view real-time traffic conditions through the Thruway Authority’s website and mobile app, available for iPhone and Android devices, and can register for TRANSalert emails for the latest updates, according to the agency.
